What you already knew, now in writing.

Hope your week is holding up.

This is not a week where you needed the news to know what was happening.

You have been having the conversations for months. The phone calls with families. The board papers that frame the wait in language the board can hear. The case conferences where the package that would have helped six months ago is now needed at a higher acuity. The colleagues who are leaving and cannot be replaced by a new hire and an orientation manual.

What changed this week is not the situation. What changed is that the situation became visible to people who were not previously looking.

In case you have not had time to track it, here is what landed.

The Wait Times Report is in.
A year for Support at Home. Thirteen months for residential. The number you have been saying out loud for years is now a published figure.

The federal budget invested $3.7 billion in aged care.
New residential beds, with construction from July 2027. The personal care co-contribution introduced eleven months ago is being removed from October. No new Support at Home packages on top of the 83,000 already in the pipeline. The budget funded what could be put on a calendar. The wait is not something the government can time.

The Future Fit FOI release
It covers the program funded to prepare the sector for the transition to fee-for-service. The ANAO found it ineffective last year. The Commonwealth Home Support Program move is now no earlier than 1 July 2027. The people who held the program together for a generation are being made redundant while the preparation that was supposed to be done remains undone.

You did not need any of this in writing to know it.
You have been reading the situation accurately for a long time. That is the part that has cost you something. Not the wait, not the budget, not the program. The cost is having been the person who saw it before it was visible, and carried it in board papers and case notes and family conversations without a room where you could put it down.

The clarity you have is not a problem. It is the most accurate read in the building. What you have not had is somewhere to take it that is not a workaround, not a coping strategy, and not a performance review.


One more thing.

The room I have been describing, where the carrying can be put down with people who do not need it explained, does not exist for most middle leaders in aged care.
